The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has been accused of purposely and callously disenfranchising Nigerian voters as it’s gate is locked to those willing to collect their Permanent Voters (Registration) popularly called PVC.
CityNews Nigeria learnt that many Nigerians now risk being disenfranchised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as it’s getting increasingly difficult to get voters registration card from some of its offices(especially in Lagos).
CityNews Nigeria correspondent who recently went round Lagos said the Yakubu-Mahmoud led commission is apparently overwhelmed by the sharp rise in the number of people trying to get their permanent voters’ card from their various offices in Lagos metropolis.
CityNews learnt that the Ifako-Ijaiye INEC office located at Ijaiye/Ojokoro area, a suburb of Lagos was practically locked today with many would-be voters languishing and complaining bitterly outside of the office as their pleas to enter the building in order to get their PVCs fell on deaf ears.
This online medium also gathered that the directive to lock out people trying to get their PVCs from the commission’s office was ‘from the above’ and they had to comply with the order.
A very disenchanted and disappointed resident of the local government who spoke to our reporter on the condition of anonymity said ‘it appears they’re overwhelmed and short-staffed and they can’t be bothered about our time, money we spent in coming here and our right to get this PVC in order not to be disenfranchised, it’s sickening to say the least. I’m going home now. Wasted the whole of today’.
CityNews Nigeria tried to reach the head of Corporate Affairs of INEC to get the commission to speak on the development but couldn’t reach him to comment as at press time.
