Michael Schumacher is set be awarded with the State Prize of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in a special ceremony.
Taking place on 20 July, the service will see Schumacher’s close friend and former Ferrari boss Jean Todt give a speech in honour of the seven-time World Champion, who is being recognised not only for his sporting achievements but also his work for good causes.
The event will take place at Motorworld Cologne, and Schumacher’s wife Corinna and children Gina and Mick will receive the award on his behalf.
Schumacher has not appeared in public since he suffered head injuries in a skiing accident in December 2013.
“Michael Schumacher’s work as a sportsman and as a supporter of good causes radiates far beyond the borders of his home state of North Rhine-Westphalia,” said NRW Minister President Hendrik Wust, as quoted by Sky Sports.
Wust added that Schumacher remains one of the “outstanding personalities in the history of sport worldwide”.
Reflecting on the German’s wider work outside of sport, Wust said that he “never lost his grip on the ground and always kept his fellow human beings in mind”.
The State Prize is the highest award of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and is usually awarded once a year, though it was not awarded in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
