Oyo-state-based Nigerian spiritual leader, Guru Maharaj Ji, has asked electorates to focus on competence as the debate over the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC’s) Muslim-Muslim ticket in respect of the 2023 presidential election rages.
CityNews Nigeria reports that Maharaj Ji was speaking at the Alarere residence of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, shortly after paying homage to the monarch on Monday.
“The concern should be what an individual in the office is capable of doing,” Maharaj Ji said.
“Religion has not helped this country in any form and if anybody disagrees with me, such a person should point at what religion has done for us in terms of development.
“Or, are we saying Nigerians are not religious enough? What is important is what a particular person can do, for now, what we need is performance.”
Despite widespread condemnation, Bola Tinubu, presidential flagbearer of the APC stuck with his choice of Kashim Shettima, a fellow Muslim, as running mate.
