EPL: Saturday football live updates: Everton and Liverpool play to frantic draw; Pulisic starts for Chelsea

The busiest football Saturday of the 2022-23 season began with a cracking Merseyside derby and an Old Firm blowout. It will eventually feature Real Madrid and BarcelonaJuventus and Bayern Munich, and AC Milan vs. Inter.

There are also eight English Premier League games. And the U.S. women’s national team begins its World Cup ramp-up, while American men — including Christian Pulisic, who’s starting for Chelsea — take fields across Europe and MLS.

Contrasting fortunes so far for the two American defenders at Fulham:

    — Antonee Robinson off injured. Appeared to be a rolled ankle. Hopefully not serious.

    — Tim Ream continues to be tremendous. So sharp, reading the game. Timely block to deny Son in the penalty area.

Pulisic playing in a role that’s some combination of winger, attacking midfielder and striker. He’s paired up top in a 3-5-2 with Raheem Sterling. A fairly bright opening 15 minutes for him.

Six Premier League games now underway, including:

    — Chelsea-West Ham, where Christian Pulisic and Wesley Fofana are getting their first starts of the season

    — Brentford-Leeds, where Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams start yet again (as they have in all of Leeds’ Premier League games so far this season)

    — Tottenham-Fulham, where Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson are trying to deal with Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son.

In Germany, Bayern Munich answered an early Union Berlin goal. 1-1 heading toward halftime. (USMNT striker Jordan Pefok is out with a muscle injury.)

In Italy, Juventus and Fiorentina are tied 1-1 early in the second half.

And now Mo Salah off the post in the 95th minute!

The ball just won’t go in. A frantic, back-and-forth game finishes 0-0. Jordan Pickford pumps his fists.

Both sides, in a way, will be satisfied with both the performance and the result. Both, along with the millions watching, deserved goals, but somehow none came.

It’d feel criminal if Everton comes away from this game with nothing.

(It also wouldn’t quite feel right if Liverpool comes away with nothing, though.)

    Another remarkable save from Alisson!

And what a remarkable Merseyside Derby this is. Still 0-0, five minutes plus stoppage time to play.
