Nigerian Govt to establish Labour Market Information System
The Nigerian Government has disclosed plan to establish a Labour Market Information System (LMIS).
Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, disclosed that the LMIS is to address the lack of harmonized information on labour market.
Ngige stated this while flagging off a three-day Labour Market Information System (LMIS) Stakeholders Workshop in Abuja.
The Minister, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Ms Kachollom Daju, explained that the LMIS would inform and guide policymakerspolicymakers in devising and implementing active Labour market policies and strategies designed to close the skills gap in the country and enhance national planning and development.
Ngige noted that LMIS, in collaboration with other stakeholders, would harmonize into one platform, all the fragmented labour market information spread across many Ministries and Agencies.
The Minister added that LMIS is a one-stop shop for labour market information that would provide data for national policy-making,
He added that it would also provide easy access to Labour Market Information by users of such information.
Head, Press and Public Relations, Olajide Oshundun, in a statement quoted Ngige as saying, ““The availability of reliable, timely and robust labour market information is key for policy-making, education planning, career guidance and enterprise strategies.”
According to Ngige, a well-established labour market information system would provide insight into both the supply and demand sides of the labour market, which would help to forecast trends for job seekers, training institutions, enterprises and policymakers.
He noted that generating comprehensive, reliable and up-to-date labour market information required an increased collaboration among stakeholders.
