1. President Muhammadu Buhari has tasked Nigerians to hope and pray for God’s will to be done as the country prepares to elect a new president, governors and lawmakers at national and States’ levels in next year’s general elections. He spoke at the opening of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion Standing Committee Meeting, yesterday, in Abuja.
3. The Federal Government, yesterday, described as illegal a protest staged by members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Tuesday which resulted in a gridlock on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. For second consecutive days, students, under the aegis of NANS, had obstructed traffic on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and in the Oyo State capital.
3. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is scheduled to present the proposed N19.76 trillion 2023 Appropriation Bill to the National Assembly in the first week of October. Gbajabiamila stated this, yesterday, in Abuja, while inspecting ongoing renovation on the main chamber of the House of Representatives.
4. The Lagos State Government, yesterday, warned that due to prevailing environmental issues, danger looms in coastal areas of Apapa, Ojo, Ikorodu, Ibeju Lekki and Badagry local government areas of the State if human attitude to the environment is not appropriately checked.
5. The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Musiliu Smith has resigned his position. It was gathered that the Board of the Commission asked Smith to resign following the ongoing crisis with the Nigeria Police Force and he accepted.
6. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has insisted on the resignation of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyorchia Ayu. Makinde, who belongs to the camp of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers, made this call at the South-West PDP stakeholders’ meeting with the presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
7. The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) says it is unthinkable to keep displaced persons in camp for over five years, expressing worry over the plight of displaced persons in the State. Executive Secretary of SEMA, Dr Emmanuel Shior, made the remark on Wednesday while addressing journalists in Makurdi during the monthly food distribution to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the State.
8. The 19 northern governors and all the traditional rulers in the region have called for the amendment of the 1999 Constitution to give legal backing to State police. This recommendation was contained in the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting of the Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF) and the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council (NTRC) held on Monday night in Abuja.
9. The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Olamilekan Adeola, said on Wednesday that over 400 out of 541 Federal Government’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies are to be scrapped as recommended by Stephen Orosanye-led Presidential Committee on agencies’ rationalisation.
10. An Ikeja Special Offences Court will on Monday rule on a bail application filed by Olanrewaju James, also known as Baba Ijesha, whether the convict has met special circumstances for the court to grant him bail. Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo fixed the date after taking arguments from both the prosecuting and defence counsel.
