Lewis Hamilton received an apology from fans of the Denver Broncos after he made his first trip to see the NFL franchise that he co-owns. The seven-time Formula One world champion was part of a consortium that took over the three-times Super Bowl champions in August. However, he was not treated to a classic at his first match, watching his team slump to a 19-16 defeat to Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night.
Hamilton was an investor within the Walter-Penner group who had their takeover bid unanimously accepted in August. The deal was the most expensive sports franchise, almost doubling the previous record set for the New York Mets baseball team.
However, the team’s start to the new season under the new ownership has been less than impressive. The Broncos have lost four of their opening six matches, including the last three, with Hamilton witnessing a disappointing 19-16 defeat at the hands of the Chargers for his first match.
Fans of the Broncos took to social media after the match to apologise to the Mercedes driver for what he watched at the match.
One wrote: “I am a big fan of @LewisHamilton. I have been waiting to see him at one of our games. I’m sorry all of us have had to watch these @Broncos. He should’ve bought into the @Avalanche or the @Nuggets.”
