The Mega Millions is continuing to climb.
No winners have been announced, so you know what that means—the Mega Millions jackpot continues to climb to a skyrocketing amount!
After no one bought a winning ticket in the drawing this past Tuesday, the Mega Millions jackpot rose to an estimated $940 million—the sixth-largest jackpot in U.S. history.
You better hurry and grab those tickets, as the next drawing is scheduled for Friday, January 6, 2023, at 11 p.m. E.T. Tickets are sold across 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
If you’re already dreaming about the multiple ways you can spend your winnings, don’t get too excited, as the amount drops after Uncle Sam takes his share.
The $940 million payout decreases to an estimated $483.5 million after taxes.
The person with the winning ticket also has the option to collect the money as annuity payments over 29 years, though most people opt for the cash payout.
Since the game began in 2002, there have been three jackpots larger than Friday’s estimated prize with $1.537 billion being the largest that was awarded on Oct. 23, 2018, per the Mega Millions website. One person bought the only winning ticket in South Carolina.
The second largest prize was just claimed this past July 2022 with $1.337 billion in Illinois. The second largest comes in at a whopping $1.05 billion and was awarded in Michigan on January 22, 2021.
This marks the first lottery game of 2023, and we can’t wait to see what the outcome of the big drawing will be!
