BREAKING: Fresh protest erupts in Ibadan over naira, petrol scarcity
Angry protesters on Monday morning took to the gate of the University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State, in an expression of frustration over the scarcity of naira notes and Premium Motor Spirits (PMS), popularly called petrol.
CITYNEWS NIGERIA reports that members of the university’s community barricaded the institution’s gate, thereby preventing vehicular movement and other activities.
This newspaper learned that soldiers and Operation Burst officers have arrived at the scene to curb violence.
Citizens have been groaning over the unavailability of petrol for many weeks.
Last week, protests were held in Ibadan, with thugs hijacking the demonstrations and destroying properties in some areas.
The difficulties are compounded by the scarcity of new naira notes as the 10 February deadline for the end of the old notes as a legal tender approaches.
State governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) last Friday met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa in Abuja over the currency redesign crisis.
At the end of the meeting, President Buhari asked to be given seven days to review the situation.
