Lewis Hamilton has been told that three of the fastest teams on the F1 grid are not interested in signing the seven-time world champion. The British star’s contract with Mercedes ends at the end of this season and he is yet to sign an extension resulting in speculation he may move elsewhere in search of a more competitive car.
Hamilton has been with Mercedes since 2013 and has won six of his seven world titles with the constructor. However, Red Bull have overtaken the Silver Arrows to become the dominant force in F1 resulting in Hamilton becoming frustrated and criticising their engineers for not listening to him over the concept for this season’s car.
The seven-time world champion has been tipped to join Ferrari by former F1 boss Eddie Jordan if he walks away from Mercedes at the end of this season. The uncertainty surrounding Hamilton’s future has resulted in the Silver Arrows holding talks with Charles Leclerc as a swap between the stars is rumoured.
Haas boss Guenther Steiner has been vocal over Hamilton’s future claiming that a move to Red Bull or Ferrari this late in his career would be unlikely to work out. He has now claimed that both constructors and also Aston Martin wouldn’t be interested in Hamilton anyway.
Talking to the Daily Mail the Haas boss said: “Where could he (Hamilton) go? Honestly, I don’t know. Red Bull have put everything on Max (Verstappen). Max is their man. Why would they now change Max for Lewis?
”When you are the principal or when you’re running a team, you don’t want to entertain two guys. You want to entertain yourself of being world champion. I’m not doubting Lewis’ capability but I just say, I don’t see it because the people which have the other top three cars are not looking at Lewis.”
Steiner believes that Hamilton will work with the engineers at Mercedes and end his illustrious career with the Silver Arrows. He previously told the PA news agency: “Lewis will stay at Mercedes until the end of his career. What other opportunities are out there for him? Think about that one. What other options are around? I don’t think he has many.
“He is at a stage where he is so close [to the end of his career] that doing anything different and getting used to something else would not be very positive for him. He is not happy this year because he hasn’t won a race. But he has had a lot of good years with Mercedes so he needs to stick with the people who made him.”
