A royal expert has described members of the so-called Sussex Squad as “abhorrent”, blasting the supporters of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle who he claims have trolled him in the past.
During a panel discussion about the Royal Family — hosted by Yahoo News UK’s royal executive editor Omid Scobie — Robert Jobson blasted pro-Sussex trolls as he discussed the Royal Family’s treatment of Meghan and Harry.
“They needed to make her feel really part of it and I think he did try but there were certain members of the royal family — extended — who didn’t do enough,” Jobson said, going on to mention Meghan’s 16-day royal tour of Australia while she was pregnant with her son, Archie.
“She was trying very hard on that trip. Did a really good job, but she was definitely nervous, she was feeling pressure”, he said. “I remember watching her and thinking, this is all going to blow up because she was under so much pressure and she was doing her best, her damnedest to be perfect.”
Interrupted by Scobie, who pointed out that Meghan had been pregnant at the time of the tour, Jobson replied: “I’m not criticising her, not at all […] nervousness isn’t a criticism.
“You have to be very careful because you get trolled, like I have done before, by moronic people,” he said. “People that don’t even listen or don’t even read properly – the Sussex Squad for example, who I find abhorrent.”
The panel also discussed the opposing “Kate’s rangers”, agreeing that the two women should never have been pitted against one another and arguing the monarchy should be a uniting force.
Discussing how Meghan experienced the royal tour, Jobson added: “The people around should have done more to support Meghan, and I think Harry in particular should have done more to support Meghan.”
The couple announced they were stepping back as senior members of the Royal Family in January 2020, later relocating to California, where they now live.
Their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, Netflix TV series and Harry’s memoir Spare have caused a huge rift within the Royal Family, and the Sussexes confirmed that while Harry would be attending his father King Charles‘s coronation, Meghan would remain in the US.
While King Charles is said to be pleased that Harry will be in attendance, a source told The Sun he was “very disappointed” that Meghan and his grandchildren would not be attending.
It is expected that Harry will only spend a short time in the country during his coronation visit, likely to rush back to California to celebrate his son Prince Archie’s fourth birthday – which coincides with the King’s festivities.
