The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said the Bola Tinubu-led government must be transparent and open about the removal of fuel subsidy and the funds generated from the removal.
CityNews Nigeria reports that the former governor of Anambra State made this known on Saturday, July 29, during the #PeterObiOnParallelFacts Twitter Space forum organised by The Parallel Facts.
The former Governor of Anambra State also stated criminal component of fuel subsidy must be dealt with decisively if the country must overcome its current challenges.
Obi said if he were the president, he would reduce 50% of the payment for subsidies, adding that he would use the money saved to fund education, health and infrastructure, among other sectors.
He said, “I will reduce 50% of what we already paid for subsidy and also remove the criminal component of it.
“After doing this, we will be able to see the actual figure. You must be transparent and open about it.
“Whatever we save from it (subsidy removal) will be used to fund education, health and infrastructure, among other sectors.”
Recall Tinubu, on May 29, had declared the removal of fuel subsidy, emphasising that his government will not provide funds to subsidize the product since it was not included in the 2023 budget by the previous administration.
This decision, however, has brought hardship on Nigerians as the price of fuel and food commodities have skyrocketed in recent times with no palliative to cushion the effect.
