Fani-Kayode Reacts As Gabon Military Officers Seize Power After Election
Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has reacted to the coup in Gabon following an alleged fraudulent election.
CityNews Nigeria reports that the Gabonese President, Ali Bongo, was deposed by the military days after winning the presidential election.
According to the BBC, soldiers were said to have appeared on Gabonese national television in Gabon to announce that they had taken power.
The military also announced the annulment of Saturday’s election and the dissolution of the democratic government in the country.
Bongo, who came to power after his father’s death in 2009, won a third term in an election which opposition argued was heavily disputed.
Reacting to the development, Fani-Kayode said he is not surprised at the coup, and people should expect more coups in the Francophone countries in West and Central Africa.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain questioned if the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) or the Africa Union would invade Gabon, as in the case of Niger Republic decision.
He wrote on Twitter, “Another coup has taken place in Africa and this time it is in the nation of Gabon.
“It appears that the warning I gave in my last essay, titled ‘Does Killing Nigerien Babies Bring Glory To Our Name?’, was prophetic.
“I am not suprised that this has happened and we should expect more coups in the Francophone countries in West and Central Africa.
“I wonder whether ECOWAS or the African Union will threaten to invade Gabon too?
