Jurgen Klopp’s men also wanted victory, as they started the day in third position, behind Aston Villa who drew 1-1 with Sheffield United.

But it was Arsenal who took the lead, after Gabriel Magalhaes headed in Martin Odegaard’s free-kick.

Mohamed Salah equalized for the hosts, as he cut inside Oleksandr Zinchenko and lashed the ball past David Raya.

The result means Mikel Arteta’s team have hit 40 points, one more than both Liverpool and Villa who have 39 points each.
