Tennessee Governor signs law allowing teachers to carry guns
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed a law on Friday allowing teachers and school staff to carry concealed handguns in school buildings and on campuses.
This decision came after state legislators approved the bill earlier in the week.
Under the new law, teachers and staff can carry concealed weapons on school grounds, with approval from the principal and others. Governor Lee emphasized that it’s up to each school district to decide whether to implement this measure.
The bill has sparked debate, with some arguing it’s a necessary safety measure in the face of ongoing gun violence. However, opponents worry about the potential risks and argue for alternative approaches to school safety.
To carry a concealed weapon, school personnel must meet specific requirements, including obtaining an enhanced carry permit, completing training, and undergoing background checks and psychological exams.
Despite the law, handguns cannot be openly carried or brought into certain areas during school events. Additionally, there’s no requirement for parents to be informed if their child’s teacher is armed.
Critics of the law, including Democratic state Senator Raumesh Akbari, have raised concerns about prioritizing guns over education. The Tennessee Education Association has also called for measures focused on student safety without relying on teachers carrying firearms.
While the law aims to enhance security, its effectiveness remains a subject of debate among educators like Chris Cogdill, who question whether carrying guns is the best approach to keeping students safe.
