Riccardo Calafiori, who featured in all three of Italy’s group stage matches at Euro 2024, has penned a five-year contract with the Gunners after the Premier League side paid Bologna £42 million, including add-ons.
After completing the deal, the Italian defender said: “I’m really happy to be here. I waited a lot.
“I hope we are going to do something great this season.”
The 22-year-old Calafiori, who is capable of playing as a midfielder, central defender or left-back, has joined his new teammates in Philadelphia, USA for pre-season.
Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has hailed Riccardo Calafiori as a “great signing,” praising his skills and potential to contribute to the team’s pursuit of major trophies.
Calafiori’s versatile playing style and his impressive performances for both Bologna and Italy have made him a sought-after talent, with Juventus, Real Madrid and Chelsea previously linked with him.
The addition of Calafiori is seen as a significant move as Arsenal aims to mount a title challenge after finishing as runners-up in the past two Premier League seasons.
Arteta said: “Riccardo is a big personality and character, with specific skills which will make us stronger as we push to win major trophies.
“He has already shown great development in recent seasons with his performances for both Bologna and Italy, with his progression and development in the past year being really impressive.
“We’re looking forward to working with Riccardo, integrating him into the squad, and supporting him in the years to come.”
CityNews understands that Calafiori will wear shirt number 33 at Arsenal for the 2024-2025 season.
