Govt Renames Road After ‘Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo’ Singer, Highlife Legend Mike Ejeagha
Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has renamed the newly reconstructed Obinagu Road in honor of the legendary highlife musician, ‘Gentleman’ Mike Ejeagha.
CityNews reports that this gesture is part of the state government’s efforts to celebrate Ejeagha’s significant contributions to the cultural heritage of Enugu.
Governor Mbah made the announcement during the commissioning of four roads in the Abakpa Nike area of Enugu, including the newly named Mike Ejeagha Crescent.
He emphasized the importance of recognizing and honoring the achievements of the 93-year-old musician while he is still alive.
“In recognition of Mike Ejeagha’s immense contributions to the cultural heritage of Enugu State, we have renamed Obinagu Road, leading to his residence and reconstructed earlier in the year, to Mike Ejeagha Road,” Mbah said.
Following the road renaming, Governor Mbah visited Mike Ejeagha at his residence, where he expressed the state government’s deep appreciation for Ejeagha’s lifelong contributions.
Mbah pledged continued support for the highlife icon, ensuring his well-being as part of the government’s broader commitment to upholding the state’s rich cultural heritage.
The governor also used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s dedication to infrastructural development across Enugu State.
He revealed that the government has awarded contracts for the construction of 141 roads, including 20 rural roads, with Abakpa among the areas set to benefit.
“Very soon, we will commence the dualisation of Penocks Junction on the Enugu-Onitsha Road, extending all the way to Opi-Nsukka. The contract has been awarded, and work will commence shortly.
“Our commitment to transforming Enugu State is unwavering, with many more roads and projects underway to enhance the lives of our people,” Mbah announced.
Mike Ejeagha’s music has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity, particularly his 1983 hit “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche,” which became a viral sensation thanks to a dance challenge initiated by comedian Brain Jotter (Chukwuebuka Emmanuel Amuzie).
The challenge brought Ejeagha’s folklore-style music to a new generation, highlighting his enduring influence in the world of highlife music.
