Wike implements security screening for Abuja Taxi Drivers
Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has announced that all commercial drivers in Abuja must obtain security clearance from the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and Department of State Services (DSS) starting January 2025
According to The Cable, this initiative aims to curb kidnapping and “one-chance” robbery in the nation’s capital. Wike disclosed this information at the FCT Renewed Hope Youth Empowerment Programme.
Nyesom Wike stated that commercial bus and taxi drivers must obtain clearance from NPF and DSS. Drivers will be profiled by security agencies. Vehicle details, including numbers and driver information, will be recorded.
Drivers failing to meet requirements won’t operate within FCT. Wike emphasized that most Keke Napep and motorcycle operators serve as informants and beneficiaries will be profiled by security.
From January, no driver will operate without security approval and profiling. Wike handed over new cars to beneficiaries of the taxi scheme.
This move aims to enhance passenger safety and reduce crime in Abuja’s transportation sector.
