Eguavoen became the coach of the Super Eagles on an interim basis in September and has since been at the helm of the team during a crucial period.
Under Eguavoen’s leadership, the Super Eagles successfully navigated the challenges of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The team’s performance was commendable, as they finished at the top of Group D, recording three victories, two draws, and just one defeat throughout their six matches.
This impressive record secured their place in the upcoming tournament, showcasing the effectiveness of Eguavoen’s coaching strategies and ability to motivate the players.
Despite this success, the former defender’s position remains precarious, as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is reportedly contemplating the appointment of a foreign coach to lead the national team moving forward. This uncertainty has inevitably led to speculation regarding Eguavoen’s future.
In a recent interview with News Central, Oliseh praised Eguavoen’s capabilities, stating, “Austin Eguavoen is a smart guy. He is not stupid. And I also want to say that he has my full support. Because he is somebody I respect a lot.”
Oliseh emphasized the shared experiences they faced in their pursuit of bringing glory to Nigeria, highlighting Eguavoen’s character by describing him as “an honest and decent guy.”
He further underscored their camaraderie by noting, “Furthermore, he is my compatriot, so he has my full support.”
