Lagos govt speaks on ‘banning pure water’
The Lagos state government has debunked news that they banned sachet water, commonly known as pure water.
There were reports that a ban would be enforced from 2025.
However, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab described the news as wrong information and urged the public to get their facts right.
Wahab on Sunday, in a statement issued on his X handle, said “This is wrong information. Please get your facts right.
“My attention has been drawn to viral video showing individuals bursting sachet water packs at factories and on buses. I wish to state that the individuals are not enforcement officers from Lagos State Government agency or Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.
“It was confirmed that the individuals in question are enforcement officers of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, targeting sachet water that doesn’t comply with NAFDAC regulations, and in the interest of public health and safety.
” Lagos State has not banned sachet water and doesn’t have plans to do so. Our focus remains on effective plastic waste management. As part of our commitment, we are implementing mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for producers of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), sachets, and carrier bags of no less than 40 microns.”
