2027: ‘Let Us Give Our Brothers A Chance’ – Archbishop Advocates For Muslim Governor In Lagos
The Most Reverend Archbishop of the Methodist Church Nigeria Lagos, Isaac Ayo Olawuyi, has advocated for the election of a Muslim governor in Lagos State in 2027.
CityNews reports that the incumbent Governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is a Christian.
Sanwo-Olu’s second tenure will end in 2027, by which he must have completed eight years in office.
Archbishop Olawuyi observed that after Sanwo-Olu, Christians will have occupied the governorship position for 12 years.
He made this remark during the 22nd Annual Thanksgiving Service of the Lagos House of Assembly, which was themed ‘The Voice of Mercy.’
According to a statement issued by Eromosele Ebhomele, the Chief Press Secretary to Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, the Archbishop underscored the importance of religious tolerance, proposing that it is appropriate to permit a Muslim to assume leadership in Lagos.
He pointed out that Akinwunmi Ambode and Sanwo-Olu, both of whom are Christians, will have completed this 12-year tenure, with Sanwo-Olu concluding his maximum eight years and Ambode having served a single term from 2015 to 2019 following a disagreement with his political mentor.
“It would be 12 years in 2027 that we have been in the system together, and we have had Christians as governors. Now, it’s time to give our Muslim brothers a chance to govern us in Lagos State,” the statement noted.
It would be recalled that from 1999 to 2015, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola, both Muslims, served as governors of Lagos State.
