Group Empowers 400 Women Conflict Victims In Yobe, Borno

Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi Founding Director Women Advocates Research and Documentation Center (WARDC) said that “Economic empowerment for 100 women to lift women from poverty, 400 women affected by conflict were empowered to demand accountability Project goal and to improve access to justice for women and girls in Yobe and Borno states.

Legal actors are trained on women’s rights, and support the adoption of gender laws.”

He revealed this in a welcome address at GAAT Hotel, Damaturu during a two days capacity building to strengthen Women’s access to Justice, making rights a reality for conflict affected women in Yobe and Borno States funded by the Government of Netherlands implemented by UN Women and Women Advocates Research and Decumentation Center (WARDC).

The participants include Community and religious leaders, security agencies, Market Women Leaders, NCWS- Women Peace Builders and other NGOs for a two days capacity building and Consultative meeting to better engage Men and Boys on VAWG/SGV/HP.

He added that Legal actors are also trained on women’s rights, and support the adoption of gender laws.” Economic empowerment for 100 women to lift women from poverty.

The project he revealed is addressing the discrimination that continues to affect women and girls in Yobe and Borno, north east Nigeria, through providing support for legislations that can promote gender equality, strengthening institutional mechanism that can challenge discrimination and patriarchy; and also contributing to activities that will further amplify the voices of women and girls in Borno and Yobe for the realization of growth that can support the attainment of women’s human rights norms and the SDGs.

According to him, the objective of this project is to improve access to justice for Women and Girls in Yobe State.

“Our Expectation is that there will be increased capacity of women groups especially women in communities and IDP camps to demand and hold government accountable on women’s human rights issues”.
