The Egyptian government says it will deport seven Nigerians who partook in the public agitation against police brutality in Nigeria.

The Egyptian authorities said the seven Nigerians have been staying in the country without residency permits when they were arrested at an #EndSARS protest last month.

Eight of the Nigerians were arrested by Egyptian authorities in Cairo. However, only one of them had a residency permit and thus will not be deported, according to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chair of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

It would be recalled that on the 19th of October, NiDCOM had issued a statement confirming the arrest of 8 Nigerians—4 men and 4 women—by Egyptian authorities.

Contrary to what some news outlets reported, Dabiri-Erewa in a tweet announced that 7 of the detained protesters will be deported due to lack of residency permit, and not because they protested.

The one with a permit has signed undertaking not to break Egyptian laws.

She wrote: “Update on the 8 Nigerians detained in Cairo for protesting without a permit, 7 of them are to be deported to Nigeria for lack of resident permits. The only one that has Residency will get final clearance from the Minister of Interior.

“After signing an undertaking not go against the laws of Egypt, the Nigerian mission in Egypt is still appealing for leniency on behalf of the seven slated for deportation.”
