EU’s top diplomat calls on Russia to halt violations in Crimean peninsula
Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief has urged Russia to stop all violations of international law in the Crimean peninsula, reiterating EU’s support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Borrell’s statement followed a keel-laying ceremony of two assault helicopter carriers in the city of Kerch, held on July 20. The new warships will have advanced weapons, controls and communication systems, aiming at strengthening the Russian Navy’s strategic capabilities.
“The recent keel-laying ceremony of two assault ships in Kerch is yet another clear step in the ongoing militarisation of the peninsula, with a considerable negative impact on regional security in the Black Sea,” reads a statement by the Union’s External Action Service.
The bloc’s top diplomat also warned against the latest restrictions of the freedom of movement for Ukrainian citizens to and from the Crimean peninsula, as they need to have a Russian passport to access mainland Ukraine and then to return to the place of their residence.
Earlier in the week, Ukraine’s military accused the Moscow-backed separatists of breaching a ceasefire agreement near the town of Uzhivka and around Novomykhaylivka, shortly after a truce was reached.
The ceasefire was reached on July 22, following negotiations among Ukraine, Russia, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the so-called the Trilateral Contact Group.
