Serena Williams opts out of Italian Open over injury.

CityNews Nigeria reports that Serena Williams has withdrawn from next week’s Italian Open citing the Achilles issue that bothered her in a loss to Victoria Azarenka in the U.S. Open semifinals.

Organisers of the Foro Italico announced Williams absence Saturday.

Williams, a four-time champion in Rome, took a medical timeout for a tape job on her Achilles during her three-set loss on Thursday.

“I regretfully must withdraw from the (Italian Open) due to an Achilles strain,” Williams said.
