Truck Explodes On Sapele-Benin Highway

A truck, suspected to be gas-laden, has exploded along the Sapele-Benin Expressway in Delta.

CityNews Nigeria gathered the incident occurred around 7pm at Ugbenu, Ethiope West council area.

According to reports, no casualty has been recorded in the incident

Circumstances surrounding the incident were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report but the truck appeared to have fallen on the side of the road.

Ekohotblog gathered it may have been trying to dodge a bad spot when it fell and was suddenly engulfed in flames.

Fire fighters were said to be battling to put out the flames while motorists are being directed to take alternative lanes.

The Sapele-Benin highway is noted for several failed portions that have led to major accidents.

On July 22, 17 persons died when a truck exploded on the highway.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident, noting it was yet to be ascertained if there are casualties.

“I just called the DPO Oghara. He said, yes, a gas truck actually went up in flames. He said nobody actually reported the incident. And that because of the flames they cannot go close to know if there is any casualty or not,” the PPRO stated.

There have been several calls on the Federal Government to facilitate the immediate reconstruction of the road, as it has become a death trap.
