Sunday Igboho has been released from custody.
Maxwell Adeleye, a spokesman for Sunday Igboho, has said the Yoruba separatist has been freed from the custody of Benin authorities.
Mr Adeleye’s statement on Facebook Monday morning read: “Yoruba Nation Activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, fondly called Sunday Ighoho, has been released by the Government of Republic of Benin.
“The Activist was released on Monday to a Yoruba Leader and Leader of the Umbrella body of Yoruba Self-determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Professor Banji Akintoye and a French Language Expert/ Deputy Alana of Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Professor Wale Adeniran.”
The release was described as ” as a triumph of truth over darkness in Yoruba Land.”
It was unclear under what terms Mr Igboho was released. He was arrested in Cotonou in July 2021 over allegations of travelling with forged passports. He denied the charges, saying the Nigerian government instigated his detention to punish him for his separatist activities in Nigeria.
