Gbenga Shola Collins, a 38-year-old resident of Abeokuta, has been apprehended by the Eleweran Police Department on Sunday, August 13th, 2023, at the Keem Hotel Ibara housing. The arrest was made after several allegations from different quarters that he is a member of the LGBTQ community.

Following his arrest, Gbenga Shola Collins was promptly charged with the offense of being bisexual. Today Thursday, August 17th, 2023, he was brought before the Magistrate Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, Ogun State to face prosecution.

The unfolding case has garnered significant attention from the public, shedding light on the ongoing debate surrounding LGBTQ rights in Nigeria.

Advocates for equality and human rights have voiced concerns, highlighting the importance of respecting individual privacy and the right to sexual orientation.

On the other hand, conservative groups uphold that Gbenga Shola Collins’ arrest and prosecution are in line with the country’s strict anti-LGBTQ laws, which they argue are necessary to uphold societal and cultural values.

The trial continues as emotions run high in Abeokuta, with supporters from both sides anticipated to rally outside the Magistrate Court during the proceedings. Many are still watching closely as the outcome of this case may set a precedent for future LGBTQ-related legal matters in Ogun State and potentially impact the wider national conversation regarding LGBTQ rights.

As citizens await the court’s decision final decision, Gbenga Shola Collins’ lawyer applied for his bail since the offence is a bailable offence and the bail was granted.

The court sitting was adjourned till September 8th, 2023.
