The Progressive Institute: A Catalyst For Democratic Growth By Erasmus Ikhide

THE establishment of the Progressive Institute (TPI) by the All Progressives Congress (APC) marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey. There is no doubt this institute has the potential to transform the country’s political landscape by bridging the gap between leaders and citizens in the country.

One of the key objectives of The Progressive Institute TPI—as enunciated in its vision and mission statement—is to connect elected officials, appointed representatives, and the people they serve towards ensuring that governance is more inclusive and responsive.

This gap between leaders and citizens is a significant challenge in Nigeria’s democracy, leading to disconnection and mistrust across all strata of governance structures. Nigerians a great deal of the time feel disconnected from their leaders, leading to mistrust and disillusionment. This is what TPI seeks to address, among a litany of other challenges bedevilling our democratic evolution.

From available research and statistics, this lack of adequate representation by elected officials has fully undermined and totally eroded the contractual obligations between governance and the governed, raising the needs and concerns of their constituents as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution. To be true, the gap between leaders and citizens can result in ineffective governance, as policies churn out may not address the pressing needs of the people.

Another significant redeeming grace of the Progressive Institute TPI as signposted by its mandate is to facilitate dialogue between government officials and the electorate by creating platforms for citizens to engage with leaders, thereby fostering open communication and mutual understanding. The benefits of effective communication engender trust, credibility, informed decision-making, active citizen participation, accountability and transparency, collaborative governance, social cohesion and stability and improved policy outcomes.

More importantly, the institute has been enabled to build capacity of elected and appointed officials where political leaders would be trained on effective representatives, equipped to address the needs and concerns of their constituents. The training acquired will help to promote record keeping, thereby encouraging transparency and accountability in governance, ensuring that citizens have access to information and can hold their leaders accountable.

The crisis of our transitional democracy in the Fourth Republic is the failure of leaders to engage properly in terms of citizen empowerment and the right choices of projects or the needs of their people. Educating and empowering citizens to participate in the political process and ensuring their voices are heard and valued is one of the most durable ethoses of constitutional democracy.

With the establishment of this institute, one of the tragic underpinnings that have threatened the nation’s democracy in the last 25 years is the political leaders’ inability to foster internal democracy. By strengthening party structures and promoting transparency within the APC, TPI can help address internal divisions and the dominance of money politics. Research has shown that enhancing leadership capacity through regular training and equipping leaders with essential skills will enable them to drive positive change and make informed decisions.

Tellingly, the Progressive Institute has been positioned to leverage the gaps or lack of informed policy decisions of the government without buy-in from the citizens. Research and analysis conducted by TPI will provide valuable insights, enabling policymakers to make data-driven decisions in the interest of not just followers of the APC but the citizens in general.

The question is, how does the government of the day promote citizen engagement without platforms like The Progressive Institute? TPI’s community engagement initiatives will encourage citizen participation in the political process by ensuring a sense of ownership and responsibility by the political leaders.

The Progressive Institute has the potential to revolutionize Nigeria’s democratic landscape. By addressing pressing challenges, promoting internal democracy, and enhancing leadership capacity, TPI can contribute to a more inclusive, responsive, and effective governance system that have eluded Nigeria over the last 25 years of our democratic experience.
