In a heartwarming gesture of giving back, the 1994 alumni set of Government Secondary School (GSS) Garki, Area 10, awarded scholarships to 20 indigent students and a donation of speaker to the school on Friday, marking their 30-year reunion, themed: “Building Patriotic Leaders for Tomorrow”.
Representing the set, Mr. Jiboku Abayomi handed out the scholarships on behalf of the alumni president, Mr. Festus Udoebor, in support of education and community welfare.
During the event, Dr. Peter Olumuji, Chairman of the Planning Committee, addressed the students on the importance of patriotism, emphasizing that love and value for one’s country are essential.
He encouraged the young attendees to foster a sense of national pride, explaining that belief in Nigeria’s potential is crucial to achieving progress.
He also touched on obstacles to patriotism, including economic challenges, social media’s negative influence, and lingering historical issues, which can cloud a positive view of the country.
Dr. Olumuji urged students to seek good mentors, remain aware of their actions, and focus on their potential roles in Nigeria’s future development.
Highlighting the nation’s strengths and prospects, he concluded by advising students to nurture a positive attitude, as true patriotism and leadership begin with self-awareness and dedication to the greater good.
The scholarships and patriotic message not only reflect the alumni’s commitment to education but also serve as a call to inspire the next generation of leaders to contribute actively to Nigeria’s growth and unity.
