NASRE Condemns Systemic Failures Resulting In Stampedes, Calls Out Govt Failures

The Nigerian Association of Social and Resourceful Editors (NASRE) has expressed deep sadness over the recurring tragedies of food queue stampedes that have claimed at least 67 lives across the country within four days.

In a statement issued on Monday, NASRE Media Director, Lateef Owodunni, described the incidents as heartbreaking and a reflection of systemic failings, pointing to worsening poverty levels and the government’s inability to safeguard its citizens.

The organization first mourned the victims of a stampede at a Christmas funfair in Ibadan on December 18, where 35 children lost their lives.

“This devastating incident should never have happened. It highlights the urgent need for better planning and safety measures at public events, especially those involving children,” Owodunni stated.

NASRE also expressed sorrow over the tragedy in Abuja on Saturday, where at least 10 people, including children, died during a food aid distribution at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama. The group extended condolences to the affected families and the church community.

“Each life lost is a story of heartbreak for families plunged into grief. This tragedy should shake the conscience of every Nigerian,” the statement said.

The group further lamented the deadly stampede at a rice distribution event in Anambra, which claimed 22 lives and left 32 others injured. NASRE emphasized the need for reforms to prevent such tragedies during relief efforts.

“These incidents paint a grim picture of a country struggling with deep poverty and a lack of effective systems for managing social support. It is distressing that acts of charity now result in preventable deaths. The government must urgently revamp its approach to distributing palliatives to ensure safety and dignity for all,” Owodunni added.

NASRE stressed that tackling poverty is the only long-term solution to preventing such occurrences, urging the government and private organizations to address the root causes.

“No one should die in the pursuit of food or assistance. This is a wake-up call for all stakeholders to prioritize the well-being of our most vulnerable citizens,” the statement concluded.
