In a bid to enhance service delivery, transparency, and revenue collection, the Ogun State Water Corporation has announced plans to implement a mandatory transition from flat-rate and post-paid billing to prepaid water meters.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Water Resources, Hon. Damilola Otubanjo, who made this known in a statement, said the initiative aims to address non-revenue water losses caused by unpaid bills and discrepancies in billing for customers who are either not receiving adequate supply or are charged a flat rate.

The introduction of prepaid meters, she said, will ensure that consumers pay only for the water they use, promoting fairness, accountability, and efficiency in water distribution.

Regarding the outstanding debts owed to the corporation across branches, it stated that for Abeokuta alone, the corporation is currently owed over ₦632.9 million by flat-rate and post-paid customers across its service areas.

The breakdown is as follows: Adatan 1-4 (₦86,816,145.41), Elega 1 & 2 (₦171,763,691.65), Ibara (₦97,988,978), Ijeun Titun (₦168,530,757.26), and Ita Oshin (₦106,805,066.55).

It gave customers a two-week deadline for those under the flat-rate and post-paid categories to migrate to prepaid water meters and settle outstanding bills, stating that failure to comply would result in service disconnection from the corporation’s water mains.
