The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has labelled some of those who fought for democracy during the days of the late military dictator, General Sani Abacha, as now worse than the former military leader.
Obi, in a post via his account on Thursday, submitted that yesterday’s defenders of democracy have become today’s destroyers.
The former Governor of Anambra State, who spoke against the background of the state of democracy in Nigeria without mentioning names, said Abacha can now be viewed as more democratic than those who championed the fight for democracy and human rights during the days of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).
He wrote, “Yesterday defenders of democracy, today’s destroyers, What a shame.
“What an irony of history, that the acclaimed defenders of democracy and human rights who claimed to have fought for democracy during the era of General Sani Abacha now find themselves worse than the man they opposed.
“Today, General Sani Abacha, once presumed face of oppression, will be remembered as seemingly more democratic and more respectful of human rights than the so-called champions of activism from the NADECO days. Power indeed reveals character.
“A New Nigeria is POssible.”
This online medium reports that NADECO is a prominent pro-democracy group formed in Nigeria on May 15, 1994, to fight against military rule.
It was established by activists and politicians to demand the restoration of democracy, specifically the recognition of M.K.O. Abiola as the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993, election.
