Turaki-Led PDP Faction Accuses INEC Chair Of Bias, Demands Resignation

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the leadership of Tanimu Turaki has accused the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, of partisanship, urging him to resign from office.

CityNews reports that the faction said the alleged bias of the electoral umpire could undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.

The National Publicity Secretary of the faction, Comrade Ini Ememobong, made the allegation in an interview with Daily Trust, insisting that the INEC chairman had failed to demonstrate neutrality.

According to him, Amupitan’s conduct had raised concerns about the commission’s ability to conduct free and fair elections.

“The INEC chairman has been very unpretentious in his partisanship. We have said so severally and can reiterate same,” Ememobong said.

He warned that the alleged partisanship had become a major obstacle to credible elections.

“His partisanship has become the greatest impediment to the conduct of a free and fair election in 2027,” he added.

Ememobong urged the INEC chairman to step down in order to preserve the credibility of the electoral process.

He said an early resignation would help restore public confidence in the commission ahead of the next general election.

ADC Also Criticises Alleged Bias

Similarly, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) criticised the alleged partisan conduct of the INEC chairman.

In a statement on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party described the alleged past partisan commentary as “a grave affront to the integrity of our electoral system.”

The party also warned that it could escalate civil disobedience if the INEC chairman failed to step down from office.
