The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has cautioned Nigerians against falling prey to fraudulent messages and emails purportedly from the bank.

The CBN in a statement issued by Hakama Ali, its acting Director, Corporate Communications said said these messages are intended to misinform members of the public.

According to Ali, the fraudulent messages always prompt recipients to click links and peddle false information about the CBN’s leadership, licensing, and policy issues.

She also said that these messages target personal accounts of recipients by hacking into their systems.

Further urging the public to only trust the apex bank’s website, Ali also encouraged Nigerians to always verify the authenticity of every communication through its official channels.

She said, “The official website of the Central Bank of Nigeria remains www.cbn.gov.ng. Members of the public are strongly advised to: Refrain from clicking links or sharing personal information on suspicious websites, verify the authenticity of all CBN communications through the official website and recognised media outlets and report any suspected fraudulent site, email, or message to law enforcement authorities.

“The CBN remains fully committed to safeguarding the Nigerian financial system and continues to strengthen its cybersecurity frameworks in collaboration with relevant agencies to protect the public against digital fraud,” Ali said.
