JUST IN: PDP BoT, NWC Leaders Hold Closed-Door Meeting With Makinde

Leaders of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Monday held a closed-door meeting with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, in Ibadan amid growing tension within the opposition party.

The meeting took place at the Governor’s Office and was attended by members of the factional PDP BoT led by Adolphus Wabara as well as officials of the party’s interim National Working Committee headed by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki.

Although party leaders kept details of the discussions away from the public, insiders disclosed that the talks were centred on recent political developments surrounding Governor Makinde and the future of the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources within the party said the meeting may not be unconnected with speculations linking Makinde to a possible presidential ambition outside the PDP platform. Reports in recent weeks have suggested that the Oyo governor could be considering the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, as a political option if the crisis within the PDP remains unresolved.

Party stakeholders were also said to have discussed the worsening security situation in parts of Oyo State following recent reports of attacks by suspected bandits around some communities in Ibadan and its environs.

One source familiar with the meeting said party leaders were seeking clarity on Makinde’s political direction and his position on ongoing realignments within the opposition camp.

“The leaders want to understand where the governor stands as political conversations ahead of 2027 continue to gather momentum. There are concerns over recent reports and the effect they could have on the PDP,” the source said.

The meeting, which lasted several hours behind closed doors, further sparked speculation among party members and political observers, especially as the PDP continues to battle internal divisions at the national level.

Makinde has remained one of the influential figures in the opposition party and has repeatedly called for internal reforms within the PDP. His role in recent political negotiations across the South-West has also strengthened talks about his possible national ambitions.

As of the time of filing this report, officials who attended the meeting had yet to brief journalists on the outcome of the deliberations.
