2027: PDP Raises Alarm Over Plot to Seize Secretariat, Weaken Opposition

The Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused Governor Francis Nwifuru of moves aimed at weakening opposition politics in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party alleged that there were plans by the state government to revoke the Certificate of Occupancy of its secretariat located in Abakaliki. PDP described the development as part of a wider attempt to suppress opposition voices in the state.

Politics Nigeria reports that the allegation was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the party leadership in Ebonyi. The statement was jointly signed by the state Chairman, Chukwuma Igwe, State Secretary, Henry Ngonu, and the State Publicity Secretary, Prince Darlington Onwe.

According to the opposition party, the situation escalated last week when some of its members reportedly went to clean the secretariat in preparation for the party primaries but were allegedly chased away by security operatives.

The PDP claimed the action was politically motivated and intended to intimidate its members and cripple its activities in the state.

In the statement, the party said it was drawing the attention of security agencies, the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, members of the diplomatic community and the general public to what it described as attempts to undermine democracy in Ebonyi State.

The party further alleged that public institutions and state resources had been deployed over the years to weaken opposition parties, especially the PDP.

The opposition party called on President Bola Tinubu, the Inspector-General of Police, the National Security Adviser and INEC to urgently intervene to prevent what it described as a dangerous political situation in the state.

PDP also recalled that Governor Nwifuru rose through the ranks on the platform of the party before defecting to the ruling party. The party noted that he served as a member of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly and later became Speaker under the PDP administration.

“It is unfortunate that Governor Nwifuru seems to want to become the proverbial river that forgot its source,” the statement read.
