Royal Document Raises Fresh Questions Over Senator Alli’s Oyo Governorship Ambition

Fresh attention has been drawn to the political future of Oyo State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, following the emergence of a document showing that he was formally conferred with a royal title under the Chiefs Law of Oyo State.

According to Western Post, the document, titled “Conferment of Obaship on Ekaarun Balogun,” indicated that Governor Seyi Makinde approved the conferment of the title of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sarafadeen Abiodun Alli.

The document revealed the approval was made pursuant to Section 28(1), Cap. 28 Vol. 1 of the Chiefs Law of Oyo State 2000.

The development has triggered debate over the implications of Alli’s reported governorship ambition ahead of the 2027 election.

Observers noted that traditional rulers are generally expected to remain politically neutral and avoid partisan political activities.

They argued that Alli may eventually be required to choose between pursuing elective office and retaining his royal status, depending on the relevant laws and traditional requirements.

Legal and traditional affairs commentators said any decision to leave the traditional institution could affect Alli’s position within the Olubadan succession structure.

Stakeholders familiar with the Ibadan traditional system said vacating a position in the hierarchy could have long-term consequences for progression through the traditional line.

Although Alli had previously downplayed concerns over the matter, he had yet to publicly respond to the specific implications of the newly surfaced document as of the time of filing this report.
