Breaking: FG Launches Free TV Platform Today, Gives Nigerians Access to 100 Channels

The Federal Government is set to launch a new digital television platform that will provide Nigerians with access to 100 free-to-air television channels as part of efforts to accelerate the country’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting.

The platform, scheduled for unveiling on Wednesday, is expected to serve as a major step in reviving Nigeria’s Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme, a project that has faced several delays over the years despite repeated commitments by authorities to complete the migration.

The development followed a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Abuja. The meeting brought together key players in the broadcasting industry, including regulators, television operators, signal distributors, satellite service providers, set-top box manufacturers and content creators.

Speaking during the session, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the government remains committed to ensuring the successful implementation of the digital broadcasting initiative.

According to him, the impact of the programme goes beyond improving television transmission. He noted that the project is expected to stimulate economic activities, create employment opportunities and strengthen Nigeria’s creative industry through increased local content production.

“The success of the DSO will not be measured simply by the deployment of digital infrastructure. It will be measured by the jobs created, businesses supported, local content produced, investments attracted, and the opportunities opened for future generations of Nigerians,” the minister said.

At the end of deliberations, stakeholders agreed on the adoption of a hybrid broadcasting model that combines Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite broadcasting and digital application-based platforms.

Industry players also maintained that Digital Terrestrial Television remains an important component of the broadcasting ecosystem and should continue to play a central role in the country’s digital migration strategy.

To drive implementation of the new framework, participants approved the reconstitution of the Digital Implementation Team, popularly known as DigiTeam. The committee will be responsible for coordinating activities and ensuring that agreed resolutions are effectively executed.

Stakeholders further pledged support for initiatives aimed at creating jobs, encouraging indigenous manufacturing and promoting locally produced content across television platforms.

The meeting also directed the NBC to take measures that would safeguard investments already made by set-top box manufacturers and other industry operators. The commission was equally urged to intensify consultations with stakeholders in addressing technical and regulatory challenges affecting the sector.

The Digital Switch Over programme was introduced to improve broadcasting quality, expand channel offerings and create more opportunities within the media and entertainment industry. However, implementation has suffered multiple setbacks over funding, infrastructure and regulatory concerns.

With the launch of the new platform and the adoption of a fresh implementation strategy, the Federal Government is hopeful that the long-awaited transition to digital broadcasting can finally gain momentum.
