Players and officials of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), Oyo State’s premier football team, were left stranded in Akure, Ondo State, after their team bus broke down multiple times. This incident occurred just 48 hours before their important Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match against Katsina United, sparking outrage among fans and stakeholders.
The situation has drawn urgent calls for intervention from Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde. According to a statement shared with SaharaReporters by a club loyalist and sports journalist on Wednesday evening, the bus—donated by Governor Makinde’s administration in 2021—has proven unreliable, repeatedly breaking down and causing unnecessary hardship for the players and technical staff.
The breakdowns have raised concerns over the potential impact on the team’s performance, especially as they are fighting for a continental ticket for the first time in over two decades. The team’s supporters are worried that this disruption could lead to fatigue, affecting their chances of success in the crucial match.
The statement expressed frustration at the ongoing situation, urging Governor Makinde to take immediate action. “While the regular monthly subvention is appreciated, it is no longer enough to guarantee the team’s success,” the statement said. “The current state of the bus poses a serious risk to the players’ morale and preparation.”
With the NPFL match against Katsina United just around the corner, the clock is ticking for the Oyo State Government to resolve this issue and provide a reliable means of transportation for the team. Fans and stakeholders are hopeful that prompt intervention will ensure the Shooting Stars can continue their quest for continental glory.
