I’m Not Desperate To Be President Or VP – Peter Obi Insists After Joining NDC

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has insisted that he is not desperate to become Nigeria’s President, Vice or Senate President.

This is as he urged members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to avoid litigation and internal disputes, warning that court battles could weaken efforts to build a credible political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

CityNews reports that Obi made the appeal on Sunday shortly after he and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, received membership cards of the party.

Addressing party members, Obi said the NDC must avoid the kind of internal legal disputes that have weakened many political parties in the country.

He urged members to embrace unity and discipline rather than dragging the party into court.

Obi said, “Please let there be no litigation. Party members, please don’t go to court. We want to build a party, we are not lawyers.

“We are pleading with the judiciary. Please end cases in party so we can face the job of building a new Nigeria that is possible.”

The former Labour Party presidential candidate said the party must focus on building strong institutions and providing Nigerians with a viable alternative.

‘We Want A Country Where Nobody Can Become Somebody’

Obi said his political engagement was driven by the desire to build a country where every citizen could succeed, regardless of background or connection.

He said, “We want to build a country where a child of nobody can be somebody without knowing anybody. That is what we want to do.”

He warned party members against actions that could destabilise the NDC at a critical stage, adding that discipline would be necessary to keep the platform focused on its goal.

According to him, political actors must place national interest above personal ambition if the opposition hopes to build a movement capable of challenging the ruling party in 2027.

The development came hours after Obi and Kwankwaso held a closed-door meeting with leaders of the NDC at the Abuja residence of the party’s National Leader and former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson.

The meeting, held in Guzape, was believed to be part of ongoing consultations aimed at consolidating opposition forces ahead of the next general elections.

CityNews reports that Obi joined the NDC following his recent exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He had blamed his departure on internal crises, persistent legal disputes and what he described as a toxic political environment marked by division and distraction from national issues.

The former governor maintained that his decision to leave the ADC was not caused by personal disagreement with party leaders but by systemic challenges that, in his view, made effective political organisation difficult.

Obi Says He Is Not Desperate For Office

Despite the shifting political alliances, Obi has repeatedly said his political decisions are driven by national interest, not personal ambition.

He had said, “I am not desperate to be President, Vice President or Senate President. I am desperate to see a Nigeria where people can live in dignity, without hunger, fear, or displacement.”
