Former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), has revealed that he personally advised former President Olusegun Obasanjo not to contest Nigeria’s 1999 presidential election after regaining his freedom from prison. The retired General said his counsel was based on the difficult experience Obasanjo had endured under the late Gen. Sani Abacha’s administration. According to him, he believed the former military ruler should focus on rebuilding his life instead of returning to the political scene. The disclosure is contained in Abdulsalami’s autobiography, Call of Duty, which was unveiled in Abuja during activities marking his 84th birthday. The book offers fresh details…
The Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Apo, Abuja, on Monday dismissed an application filed by former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, seeking to set aside a warrant of arrest earlier issued against her. CityNews reports that Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie held that the former minister failed to appear before the court without a valid reason. The judge ruled that the law empowers the court to issue a bench warrant where a defendant deliberately absents herself from criminal proceedings. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Umar-Farouq alongside Bashir Alkali and Sani Mohammed. They…
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reacted after a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja ordered the deregistration of the party and four others from taking part in the 2027 general elections. CityNews reports that the judgment, delivered by Justice Peter Lifu, directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to remove the affected political parties from the electoral process ahead of the next general election. The decision has since triggered reactions from the ADC leadership. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, spoke during a live television interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he condemned the ruling. He accused the judge of…
Nigeria’s persistent inflationary pressures have pushed Africa’s most populous country to the bottom of global quality-of-life rankings. This comes as Nigerian households and businesses continue to suffer, with the inflation rate rising for the third consecutive month in 2026 to 15.93 percent in May. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in its Consumer Price Index and inflation report, said headline and food inflation rose to 15.93 percent and 16.96 percent in May from 15.69 percent and 16.09 percent, respectively, recorded in April. Accordingly, the country’s headline and food inflation increased by 0.24 and 0.87 percentage points, respectively. NBS data further…
A former senator representing Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) just days after she left the All Progressives Congress (APC). CityNews reports that she made the move on Monday in Abeokuta during the unveiling of the deputy governorship candidate of the party in Ogun State. Party members welcomed her at the PDP secretariat as she arrived from a recent trip to the United States. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) wishes to warn, in the strongest possible terms, against any attempt to use the judiciary as an instrument to undermine democracy and plunge Nigeria into a major political crisis. We are deeply alarmed by the judgment reportedly delivered by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in a case filed by the so-called National Forum of Former Legislators seeking the de-registration of the ADC and four other political parties. This judgment stands in direct conflict with constitutional principles and all known judicial processes and procedures. The facts are straightforward. The plaintiffs had argued…
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Governor Ademola Adeleke may have suffered a major political setback ahead of the 2027 general election and the 2026 governorship election in Osun State, respectively, following a Federal High Court judgement ordering the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Accord Party, alongside three other political parties. Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja delivered the ruling on Monday in a suit filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/2026, directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the five parties for failing to meet constitutional…
The Federal Government may begin paying salaries, pensions and social welfare benefits through the eNaira under a new Central Bank of Nigeria roadmap aimed at transforming the country’s digital currency into a major payment channel. The proposal is contained in the Nigeria Payments System Vision 2028, released by the CBN, which outlines plans to expand the use of the eNaira and move it from a pilot project to a core payment rail for government and private-sector transactions. The eNaira, launched in October 2021 as Africa’s first central bank digital currency, was introduced to deepen financial inclusion, reduce the cost of…
